REVITALISING THE ECONOMICS EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

Abstract
Education stands as a crucial instrument in achieving sustainable national development. To attain this, it is essential to enhance the quality of education. This study is thus centred on the revitalization of Economics education for sustainable development in Nigeria. The necessity for Economics education in Nigerian educational institutions has arisen due to the alarming youth unemployment rates prevailing throughout the country. The surge in school enrollments has led to the establishment of more educational institutions, but this has not been matched by a corresponding increase in industries to absorb the numerous graduates annually produced. Consequently, youth unemployment has emerged as a troubling trend in Nigerian society. Nigeria has faced challenges in attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Vision 20:2020. This paper critically assesses the government’s efforts to address youth unemployment through the introduction of Economics education training programs for jobless youths, aiming to reduce poverty and social issues prevalent among Nigerian youth. The paper further highlights that Economics education exposes individuals to a wide array of activities, fostering the development of a diverse skill set, creativity, innovation, and self-reliance. However, the primary challenge facing Economics education in Nigeria remains the issue of funding. Therefore, the paper recommends that governments at all levels should intensify their efforts by providing sufficient funds to ensure the sustainability of Economics education in Nigerian educational institutions.

POOR FUNDING OF PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN NIGERIA: IMPLICATIONS FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Abstract
Insufficient financial support for schools, including secondary education, has been a significant concern within the educational sector. Recognizing the crucial role of secondary education in national development, this study therefore, in detail, looked at poor funding of public secondary schools and its implications for national development. Secondary education acts as a pivotal link between primary and tertiary levels, playing a vital role in both individual and national progress. The implications of poor funding are multifaceted and extend to areas such as compromised graduate quality, heightened unemployment rates, increased crime, inadequate resources for higher education, inefficiencies in the educational system, escalated student indiscipline, examination malpractices, and the proliferation of private schools. The research also proposes viable recommendations, including advocating for enhanced public-private partnerships. This model aims to secure funding for secondary education while maintaining government oversight, control, and supervision to ensure the responsible functioning of private schools. In other words, this study seeks ways of providing funds for secondary education through public-private participation without compromising the government’s role of controlling, supervising and monitoring the excesses of private schools.
