Abstract
The study investigated the impact of Nigerian economic crisis on students and lecturers of tertiary institution and their survival strategies. Five research questions guided the study. The study is a descriptive survey design with a population of 2270 students and 345 lectures using of faculty of education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The sample consists of 150 students sampled proportionately and 50 lectures randomly sampled from 5 department out of the 7 departments that make up the Faculty of Education, UNN. Data were collected using a 55-item questionnaire grouped into five research questions. The study revealed that the perceptions of students and lecturers on the cause(s) of economic crisis in Nigeria include poor economic planning, inadequate implementation of economic policies, increased prices of commodities, conflicting of economic policies, petroleum subsidy removal, corruption, and low productivity. The impacts of the Nigeria economic crisis on students in UNN includes drop out, inability to purchase learning materials, poor feeding, stress and anxiety due to high cost of welfare, increased poverty, among several others, the impacts of the Nigerian economic crisis on lecturers in UNN are high cost of prices of foodstuff, hunger, low research turn-out, frustration, high rate of debt, among others. The survival strategies employed by students and lecturers were prudent spending, adopting scale of preferences in spending, minimized spending, adopting scale of preferences, positive saving attitude, practicing the culture of home gardening, alternatives sources of income to support their family, engagement in entrepreneurial outfits, engagement in multiple job activities, living a moderate and non-luxurious lifestyle and reorienting families with
