Abstract
The study ascertained Teachers’ Perception on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in teaching and learning of social studies in secondary schools in Igbo- eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population for the study comprised 33 junior secondary Social studies teachers in Igbo- eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State. No sampling was done since all the 33 social studies teachers in the local government were used for the study. The reason for involving all the social studies teachers was based on the fact that the number of social studies teachers in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area is manageable. The instrument for data collection was structured questionnaire developed by the researchers. The instrument was subjected to face validation by two experts and the reliability coefficient of the instrument was 0.96 using Cronbach Alpha. Mean and standard deviation were employed to answer the research questions. The result showed that most of the social studies teachers in secondary school in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area were not proficient in the use of ICT resources to teach, research and assess students. It was revealed also that social studies secondary school teachers in the area of study perceived ICTs as very useful in their teaching specifically in improving and enhancing the quality of their teaching. Also that ICT resources like computer, data projectors, were not available in teaching and learning of social studies in secondary schools in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that there is a need for government, ministry of education and other education stakeholders to provide ICT infrastructure in all secondary schools across the country so as to encourage teachers to utilize them in their teaching. The government, ministry of education and the managements of secondary schools should collaborate and ensure that computer laboratories are provided with adequate computer hardwares and softwares among others.
