Abstract
The study explored the effect of Treffinger learning model on senior secondary school students’ achievement and self-efficacy in Economics in Plateau State. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design. Specifically, the non-randomized pre- test post-test control group design, in which intact classes were assigned to the experimental and control groups non-equivalent. The population for this study consists of all senior students of public secondary schools in Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State. The instruments used for data collection were Multiple Choice Economics Achievement Test (MCEAT) and Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (SEQ) developed by the researcher. MCEAT was also trial-tested and the result obtained was used to calculate the reliability coefficient of 0.82 using Kuder-Richardson’s formula 20 (K-R20). The reliability of the Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (SEQ) was established using the Cronbach Alpha statistic, yielding a reliability coefficient of .79. The Mean and standard deviation were used in answering the research questions. At the same time, the Analysis of Covariance was employed in testing the hypotheses at 0.05 level of
significance. The study revealed that students in the experimental group had higher achievement mean scores after treatment using the Treffinger learning model as against those in the control group who were not given treatment. The findings show that students had higher self-efficacy mean scores when exposed to the Treffinger learning model. The study recommended that Economics teachers should develop themselves in the use of Treffinger learning model to improve students’ achievement and self-efficacy.
