STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF THE INFLUENCE OF TEACHERS’ CLASSROOM MANAGERIAL STRATEGIES ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ECONOMICS OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN PATANI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, DELTA STATE.

Abstract

This study is specifically designed to investigate student’s perception of the influence of teachers’ effective classroom management strategies on academic performance in Economics of Secondary Schools in Patani Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria. There are two research questions designed for the study. The research design was a descriptive survey design, while the population comprises 3020 students and 65 teachers in 9 schools. A sample of 4 schools was selected, 2 rural and 2 urban schools, North and South based on simple random sampling technique, and 320 students were selected as respondents-80 students from each school,  40 students per class- Junior and Senior classes respectively. A questionnaire with 30 structured items placed on a four-point modified rating scale was designed for data collection. A criterion mean of 2.50 was established as a decision rule, while mean and rank order statistics were used for data analysis. The instrument was faced and content validated by three experts in the Department of Social Science Education.  A reliability coefficient of 0.84 was obtained with the use of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient. Findings from the study reveal that the classroom managerial strategies adopted by teachers in the secondary schools were effective, and their regular implementation influences students’ academic performance in economics, which leads to increase in educational output and overall growth and development in the society. More also, students perception of the influence of these strategies was high. The researcher recommends that the government, schools teachers and all stakeholders should provide necessary facilities for effective classroom management as well as motivating and directing both teachers and students to continue adopting classroom managerial strategies in teaching and learning of economics to improve students’ performance and raise the standard of education.
